As eastern Pennsylvania’s grain producing hub along the Lehigh River at the foot of the Lehigh Mountains, Allentown -- a regional marketplace for farmers and sometimes billed as the “Truck Capital of the World” -- is about an hour’s drive northwest of Philadelphia. The industrial revolution came to Allentown with the railroad in the mid-1800s, but its iron industry boom was short-lived. Immigrants attracted by the railroads and iron factories remained to pursue new commerce in industries such as silk, cigars, beer, and furniture production. Allentown, filming site of the 1988 movie Hairspray, is now reinventing itself by outfitting existing buildings with new millennium infrastructure to attract corporate entities back to downtown.
